Rome in a global world. Visual Cultures during the Carolingian Transition

The transformation of the geopolitical layout of the West caused by the rise of the Carolingian dynasty and a gradual separation from Byzantium placed Rome in a different and somewhat marginal situation, where new developments in visual culture emerged. Traditionally considered self-referential, ever since Krautheimer’s foundational study, Roman artistic production has long been isolated from advances in the wide scholarly debate on the “Carolingian Renaissance”.

Nonetheless, historiographical developments in recent decades have thoroughly demonstrated the artificiality of borders between the Carolingian Empire, the territories of southern Italy under Lombard rule and the Byzantine world. Therefore, this conference aims to consider Roman visual production within the horizon of “Europe” in the 8th and 9th centuries, through the examination of selected case studies and transversal problems. In addition to material evidence, special attention will be paid to written sources, which are fundamental for a deeper understanding of the political and cultural relations between Rome, Byzantium and the Carolingians.

Transformace geopolitického uspořádání Západu způsobená vzestupem karolínské dynastie a postupným oddělením od Byzancie postavila Řím do jiné a poněkud okrajové situace, kde se objevil nový vývoj ve vizuální kultuře. Římská umělecká produkce tak byla tradičně považována za samoreferenční, zejména kvůli Krautheimerovým studijím, a tak byla dlouho izolována od vědeckých debat o “karolínské renesancí”. Historiografický vývoj v posledních desetiletích nicméně důkladně prokázal umělost hranic mezi karolínskou říší, územím jižní Itálie pod Lombardskou vládou a byzantským světem.

Cílem této konference je proto posoudit římskou vizuální produkci v horizontu „Evropy“ v 8. a 9. století prostřednictvím zkoumání vybraných případových studií a transverzálních problémů. Kromě materiálních důkazů bude zvláštní pozornost věnována i písemným pramenům, které jsou zásadní pro hlubší pochopení politických a kulturních vztahů mezi Římem, Byzancí a oblastí tehdejší Karolinské říše.
