Two different ways of viewing the end of Roman civilisation

Velmi rádi bychom Vás pozvali na přednášku v rámci cyklu StředověC JinaX, která se bude tentokrát konat v anglickém jazyce. Přednášejícím nebude nikdo jiný než archeolog a historik Bryan Ward-Perkins, který v současné době vyučuje na prestižní Univerzitě v Oxfordu. 

A short summary of the upcoming lecture:

This talk examines two different ways of considering the ‘end of a civilisation’. The first, explored at length in the speaker’s book of 2005, is in terms of the collapse of material culture and technologies. In this respect, the Latin West and Byzantine East suffered a far more dramatic collapse in the sixth to eighth centuries than did the newly Arab world of the Near East. But there is also another way of viewing the continuity or discontinuity of a ‘civilisation’: in terms of religion, language and identity. From this point of view, it was in the Christian world that Roman civilisation continued to evolve uninterruptedly from Late Antiquity into the Middle Ages, whereas in the Near East the coming of a new religion marked the beginning of a decisive and profound cultural break.

Tato přednáška se zabývá dvěma možnými způsoby uvažování nad „koncem civilizace“. Jak přednášející rozebírá ve své knize z roku 2005, první ze způsobů „konce“ můžeme nazvat materiálním a technologickým kolapsem. Z tohoto pohledu latinský západ a byzantský východ utrpěly v období od šestého do osmého století mnohem dramatičtější pád než nově arabský svět Blízkého východu. Existuje však ještě druhý způsob, jak vnímat kontinuitu a diskontinuitu „civilizace“, a to z hlediska náboženství, jazyka a identity. Z této perspektivy se tak v křesťanském světě římská civilizace bez přerušení vyvíjela od pozdní antiky do středověku, zatímco na Blízkém východě znamenal příchod nového náboženství začátek rozhodujícího a hlubokého kulturního zlomu.
